“I’m late” is not an excuse, it is simply telling the truth. Which, IMHO, is better than a lame excuse. Still leaves you grounded, but brings you a little respect for being honest.
My late parents when I got to be about 14 or 15 would say to me “If you stay out late you will still be getting up early no matter what and all we ask is to let us know where you are at if you are going to be late”.
I worked with a girl whose parents had a super strict control of her life. She wasn’t allowed to talk on the phone unless her father answered first, she wasn’t allowed to go anywhere (literally, could not meet up with friends anywhere), and she was expected home no less than an hour after she got off work. Baldo should count his blessings he’s allowed the freedom to make his own mistakes
They need to get this sorted out—now! Baldo is kinda skating on thin ice here (which is kinda good—he’s not just an angelic, perfect kid), but really!!

Keep it up, kid, and after your grounding is over, your curfew will be even earlier.

Is that an excuse or a reason?

When I was in high school, my parents Encouraged me to roam around in the middle of the night so I could deliver newspapers.
