She’s wrong. It’s difficult to get really good fresh peaches, and those are best eaten as they are (peeled if you don’t like the skin).

Canned are easier to handle. If you have a decent opener.

Now that reminds me of the All In the Family episode with the cling peaches in heavy syrup. Happy birthday, Montana Lady!

    Happy Birthday, Montana Lady!

I tried so hard to get here on time tonight… to welcome you all, and invite you to raise a glass in celebration of Montana Lady’s 75th!

A Cleo fan, a friend, and a real survivor….I couldn’t not be here tonight to lead a toast….

“Here’s to you, Montana Lady…. and many happy returns!”

    Sorry about the late notice…

    I just found out today….

I tipped off Nighthawks and Stel… and I’m happy to see that

    the <emJuly 10th  2019 “CLEO and COMPANY”

    is leading the way…

    on Sherpa

    http://www.comicssherpa.com/site/feature?uc_comic=cscwy

Of course, the GoComics site wouldn’t open for me….

After umpteen tries, I can still only see the featured comment here….

    which is Dennis’ birthday greeting….

    no comic image yet….

And just the top half of the Cleo strip on Sherpa.

I’ll keep refreshing…. meanwhile…. drinks tonight are on the house at the Tiki for our Cleo family….

and Montana Lady, feel free to invite your Mountain Man!

We have a few more weeks to wait for fresh local peaches. They are sugar bombs, juicy as all get out. But I kind of prefer the Jersey peaches that I grew up with, smaller, less juicy, and easier to eat in your hand like an apple.

When it comes to fruit and vegetables…. California a great place to be.

however, some grown here for supermarkets are bred for size and beauty, not taste or ripeness….

Often shipped green, and ripened in sheds with ethylene gas.

That’s why I love the farmer’s market… most of the produce there is ripened on the tree, or in the field.

It’s more expensive, cos it’s more labor intensive…. and some is way out of my price range…

But I’ve cultivated relationships with a few sellers…

for instance, until two years ago, I helped one farmer sell tomatoes….

later, he also grew also grapes, melons, and squash…. and I came home with piles of them for my efforts.

He no longer sells at my market… but a different seller gives me lovely deals on blemished or slightly overripe stone fruits.

The peaches here are already sweet and tasty this year.

Tigressy… I’m sure you know the US is 25 or 30 times the size of Germany.

Our climates and terrains vary more than in all of Europe… and we may not have even tasted fruit from another state.

The Southeastern US is famous for peaches… lots and lots of big sweet peaches.

I’d never say Clara is “wrong” …. cos she’s in Ohio…. 2,000 miles from me.

In California, you’d rarely make a pie with canned fruit… or in winter, maybe some tart pie cherries.

Our canned peaches are usually “cling” varieties, for easier slicing and processing…. but not as delicious.

Fresh fruit is abundant…. the damaged peaches I get would be far cheaper and better in a pie.

Dennis… I’ve had some incredible Washington peaches that my mother-in-law would order from Harry and David.

She could afford the luxury…. but liked all her fruit sadly underripe.

if I were there at the right moment, I’d reap a bounty of perfect peaches she considered too “rotten” to eat.

The family had to train her to save fruit for the rest of us instead of tossing it.

    Montana Lady…

    I made a cake…. but it looked a little small….

So I’m also dedicating some special pies from my bakery.

    Everybody…. enjoy!

I haven’t had a decent peach since we moved to the midwest. The ones in the market are like rocks, dry, and nasty.

And now to our Grand Leader…..what a terrific surprise! It’s not everyday one turns three quarters of a century old!!! Clara is right about fresh peaches. And, yes, Cleo I’ll take a one legged dance any time.

    Thank you, Nighthawks. xoxoxoxo
