My lovely female accomplice and I went to a 5 star restaurant called The Old Dillworthtown Inn for dinner one night. Each time she got up and left the table to go have a smoke, the waiter came by and refolded her napkin. After the third time (several different meal courses, and drinks in between) he did that, she told him in a joking manner “If you fold my napkin again I’m gonna bust you one”. He just smiled and refolded her napkin again.

Wait, you fly all the way to Paris for a French restaurant, and they give you a “New Yorker” napkin in return? Barney doesn’t have to fly to New York.

Methinks the snooty French waiters are playing around with their bourgeois American customers.

The one Fine Dining “amenity” that particularly annoyed me when I experienced it was the guy who brushed off the table cloth between each course, while we were seated. It wasn’t just unnecessary (well, after the bread course there were a few stray crumbs), but it was intrusive and vaguely insulting.

Yes, in a good French restaurant, the water will decrumb your table while you’re seated, when necessary. I’ve never been troubled by it.

Yea - sweeping up crumbs is fine. It’s when they toss them on top of my soup afterward that I decide against going back.

Just as well that I prefer Italian anyway, I guess…

Heck, I’d probably prefer Applebees to wherever it is they’re eating.
