Actually, in the Middle Ages they gave it the name “Foot Ball” because everything was measured if foots. The field was 100 foots long, you only needed to move the ball 10 foots for a first down, and a flagrant foul would result in a 15-foot penalty. This is how the game was played when the Lancastrians and the Yorks had their fabled rivalry in the Wars of the Rose Bowl (truly the granddaddy of them all), and this was the game when Henry VIII rewrote the collegiate record books as an All Star linebacker for Oxford.
But then along came James I and the Stuarts, and with his love for entertainment spectacle (although he never played the game himself) he decided everything should be made three times bigger, so he changed all the dimensions from foots to yards (giving rise to the term “a Scotland Yard”). However, as a conciliatory measure he retained the name “Football” to keep the peace. Also, the League didn’t want to have to change their stationery.
