I’m gonna need to see backup for this one. My German teacher (native German speaker) confirms that it was grammatically incorrect, and what should have been said was “Ich bin Berliner.” It would be the equivalent of saying “I am a Danish” instead of “I am Danish.”

OK, I’m satisfied. However, if it had been his intent to say “I am a jelly donut”, would not “Ich bin ein Berliner” also have been correct?
