Amen. I remember the F.W. Woolworth on Grand Blvd and Olive street. Had a lunch counter for the office workers at noon. Boy, those days are gone. Blame Bill Clinton for Walmart. Clinton made it possible for China to flood the U.S. with cheap goods and Walmart picked up on that right away. Walmart even has a warehouse in China now. And the sad thing, China is NOT our friend. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Omega_Glory
Woolworths closed down over 4yrs ago in England, seems funny to hear about it, although where I live now in Portugal they would not know what a store like that was,
G.C. Murphy’s, McCrory’s, Grants, F.W. Woolworth, my town had them all back in the ’50’s and 60’s, and no one around here ever even heard of WalMart. Then in the late ’60’s and 70’s Jamesway and Town & Country came to the little mini malls. I think there was a Korvette in Harrisburg.
Actually Kresge owns Sears. I remember Kresge, Woolworth and Jupiter. Jupiter was a lower level than Kresge. And then the grocery stores. A&P and National are long gone. Kroger is Food4Less in my area, Jewel and Dominick’s are still around.
Bet a lot of readers are thinking “who?” I remember most of them. Had forgotten the names of like "Grant’’s. and “Korvette” but we maybe didn’t have that last one.
We had a plaza with both a Woolworth’s and a Woolco in Sudbury in the early 1960s. The old store was about 1/8th the size and had about the same sized staff – and better lighting. The new store had a machine that made hot corn puff rings and those chrome foot measuring devices, and about 4 acres of florescent tubed acoustic tile ceiling, plus “The Red Grill” with tables.
I remember shopping at all those stores when I was a kid. Good memories when it wasn’t shopping for clothes. Boring. Great if I was getting another turtle at Kresges.

Grandpa forgot to take his meds today. If he got them at Wal-Mart they would only cost him $4 a month, or $10 for three months.

I don’t get it. Those were the biggest stores around at the time. They were all Walmart wannabees.

He forgot G.C. Murphy’s and Duckwall’s. Before Walmart, J.M. Fields was the best.

So we’re supposed to lament the loss of 5&10’s, who edged out the mom & pop stores in the 30’s & 40’s? Gimmie a break.

There was a store called G.C. Murphy that my grandparents went to. I think it’s been out of business for a long time.
