My father received a similar call about my oldest son — maybe ten years ago. He called me, I called my son, and that was that. Scams of this nature abound, and amazingly, there are enough people who will electronically transfer money (or pay the scam in some other way).
I have a phone answer greeting that says, basically, if you’re a scammer, I won’t answer. Now, eight times out of ten, the phone just plays the message and the caller hangs up. Out of the remaining two, half are chinese recorded messages that play over the greeting. The other half are legitimate calls to me. I used to (three or so years ago) get maybe one telemarketer/scammer call per week; now it’s one or two per day.

Scammers hate it when that happens! They are not fond of you asking for their name, badge number and precinct. :o)
