WAAAY too late for Dan, but I had almost exactly this happen to me with one of my kids (minus the hat). Took one look at me coming out of the bathroom minus beard and howled her head off. I just put a towel over the bottom of my face, said hello, played “peep bo” a bit and suddenly she thought it was a great joke.

I think he looks OK with the Mustache. But when he shaved it off, that was a real surprise.
