    You have to start somewhere. I remember the big bands I used to see in the 60s and 70s for well under 10 shillings (That was half a British pound).

    Kinda like going to the casino and winning $500. Somehow forgetting the $1000 you lost prior to that.

    I had this conversation with a young guy I know who is in a band. He said he was tired because his band had played a gig out of town and all slept in their van. I suggested they could share a hotel room. He said “It’s a waste of money to pay for a hotel just to sleep.” I hinted that I understood sleeping to be the whole point of a hotel room. But then it came out that they get paid maybe $50 or $100 per gig (sometimes more, but sometimes less). This after driving maybe 5 or six hours to get to the venue. And it has to be split among the five band members, and I don’t know how many other people. So playing in a band is less a way to make money than an expensive habit.
