My dad was a BSA adult leader back in the 50’s and 60’s. He would go to scout camp for a week every summer as a “counselor”. Shorts and knee socks were part of the uniform, so he would always come home with bright red knees.
For me it wasn’t the knees (which would get covered when I did the front of my legs) so much as the back of the knees. That’s some major discomfort if you get a sunburn there.
What about bug spray? When I go these years – even for a walk to the car to get something, I have to put on a “Bug Band” or I get bitten – between sun screen and bug band I don’t even want to go out.

shouldn’t he be wearing sandals with his black socks?

People forget about their ears and their feet (if wearing sandals without socks, as the gods intended). Also “exposed areas” of the scalp. :-o

in Ben’s case I think the shade from his belly will protect his knees during a walk.

Probably missed that cause he can’t see his knees.
