Get a password repository app, especially one that synchs between different computers and operating systems. Between my job and personal accounts I have over a hundred passwords. It is NOT a good idea to use the same password for more than one account. When hackers do crack passwords on an “easy” site, they immediately try them on all accounts with the same username or email address.

If you have a system for your passwords, the I FORGOT button can cause a lot of grief. They used to give you a security question to retrieve your password, but almost every site now just has you make up yet another new one — even the site where requiring a password is ridiculous, like reading a comic strip.

I have systems for passwords – for each website, if I have several accounts at that website (such as email for me, for our reenactment unit, for my embroidery chapter, for a client who does not use email but needs for the state tax department, for where I don’t give want to give my real email address, etc) then there is a base part to the password with parts added to them depending on which email (for example). I know the basic part – which for the most part is initials of words to make it harder to crack and in my cell phone/Organizer program I have the specific add ons for each email. So the actual password is not written anywhere, but what I need for each specific email is with a code which tells me what the rest of the passwords for that site is.

Husband does not understand this system (though he is welcome to sign into any of my accounts as I am to sign into his – which all have basically one of two passwords he uses), but it works for me and nothing is written down that anyone but me would understand.

I tend to use word association then throw in random numbers and capitals., For example if I had a yahoo account I’d associate that with Gulliver’s Travels, from there it would be horses, which would lead me to the horse race in My Fair Lady so i would wind up with “Move yer bloody arse” with capitals numbers and special characters thrown in as a password i would remember.
