Is that Tom Selleck on the left? So that’s what he’s doing these days.

Where I work they did that to an employee that was retiring. Made her sit at her desk with nothing to do until the end of the day. Then had her escorted out and would no let her talk to anyone on the way out. What a way to treat a good employee after years of service.

That didn’t happen to me.They asked me to come back and do a “contract job” and then stiffed me, and got one last job for free.

We found out from our competition. They sent our customers a letter saying they had hired our best and brightest because of our upcoming closure. One of the customers faxed the letter to us. About an hour later, there were guards posted at the Company President’s door and we were called into a very large meeting.

In this sense, corporations ARE people. And it’s people who make policies like this. They don’t just spring up unbidden. And for every company with draconian policies, there’s one at the opposite end of the spectrum. I’ve been laid off by both. Yes, corporate culture matters.

At my old company, I usually found out about layoffs after the fact. They’d call a meeting and basically say, “congratulations, you survived the latest rounds of layoffs.” And there’d be more work piled on our desks when we got back to them.

I thought she was told that she could work there for three months and apply for other positions?! Maybe her saying “Why would I do that?” voided that. I’ve worked where there were layoffs and people were given notice and not escorted out or anything. But that was before the days of Upper Management being royalty equivalent and workers the serfs.

One company did that to several of us on the day of lay-offs. We weren’t even allowed back to our desks.

When I lost my job they stood there breathing down my neck, checked every item I removed from my locker, wouldn’t allow me to speak to anyone on the way out. I ignored them & spoke to everyone in sight! You work loyally for a company & they treat you like crap.

The last time I was laid off, mind you it was a small company but the owner went to the other workers to explain and then sent them over to me to say good-bye! She even worked out a problem between myself and another employee before I left because she couldn’t stand mr leaving with that unfinished. Still friends with the owner.
