There’s always a temp agency. I’ve been working for Kelly sincce I left my “real” job 1983. I don’t need as many clothes (these people will never see me again) and it’s great for the ego. The callyou in because they are short handed and are always glad to see you.
Betty’s lucky because she still has her housework to do. Not only does it help her keep busy, it gives her a reason to get up in the morning. When you’re unemployed, it’s sometimes hard to get up because there’s nothing you need to do, so why bother?
Temp. agencies are good. My first secretarial job was with Kelly Girls back in the 60s. All of the permanent jobs which I got after that were permanent jobs which had been a Kelly Girls temporary assignment to begin with. I thought it was really great. You also saved a lot of money because no one ever asked you to donate to the local coffee kitty and people didn’t keep coming around, asking you to pitch in money for anniversaries, baby showers, wedding gifts or going away presents. I got to work at some pretty interesting places as well – such as Voice of America. Temp. Agencies are really great and Betty should actually give it a try. You never can tell – she might end up typing a manuscript for a novelist – who could give her some pointers on beginning her own novel!

If you have the means to survive on savings, why not volunteer while you look for employment? Two birds, one stone.

I was totally “freaked out” being unemployed for a year. Now that I’ve been with my new job for a year, the feeling is still there in the background.
