It’s all the eating that goes on during football games that adds up. The yelling and throwing things can’t compete with the nachos and hot wings. And beer. OTOH, when you are asleep, you are not eating. However, you do keep breathing, and when you exhale, millions of carbon atoms are leaving your body. A single carbon atom weighs virtually nothing, but millions upon millions start to add up over 8 hours. They add up to 3 or 4 pounds for many people.
