I’m surprised the Captain didn’t fly around it. Unless the European air space is very restrictive. On the other hand, if they can see the wings flex, that’s always fun to watch.
My son-in-law is a Captain with a major airline. He says turbulence is like driving on a bumpy road and not dangerous. Except on a bumpy road you can stop the car and get out!
The worst turbulence I experienced on a commercial airliner was flying into Orlando one summer, the pilot was dodging thunderheads as we were on approach. That was a roller coaster ride (luckily the storms weren’t over the airport or we’d have had to divert). The worst turbulence I experienced ever was in a small, private (antique) plane flown by a stunt pilot operating from his own grass airstrip on a blustery fall day. That was actually pretty fun – the guy really knew how to fly. One thing I learned from that was that pilots have a knack for understatement. When they say it’s going to be a little bumpy, you’re in for quite the ride.
I had to fly a few time in my life. Never again. Especially with the current bullcrap security. The last time I flied was about 1997? and it was small town Thunder Bay, Canada to Toronto because it was a trip home from work. The security whatever girl looked at an Xray of my carry-on luggage and wondered what it was. It was a normal two sided shaving razor. I was away for work for 4 weeks, and some of my stuff was in the carry-on. It must be a real pain in the neck for travellers nowadays. Sad that the moslems have ruined it for everyione.

When I flew on a small plane from Tampa to Miami we hit a rough patch and the flight attendant landed on her butt.
