That’s not being a brat; that’s being a kid. Some ages you get “glad to see you” reactions; others, you don’t. Junior’s is a typical “I don’t do emotional, Mum…" early teenager. If he’d been rather younger, he’d be actively snubbing her because she’d left him behind.
Bub’s got the right idea – acknowledge each other’s presence implicitly and bond. Betty’s too overt to get the right reaction.
I’m not sure how old Junior is, but if he’s a teenager, he’s at the age where parents don’t matter unless you want something. If he was younger he’d have given Mom a hug and said he missed her, if he was an adult he’d have given Mom a hug and asked about the trip. As a teenager, it’s ok so you’re back, when’s dinner? Sort of like my cats!
well, i thought it was weird that they would go to italy and not bring their son and over thanksgiving too!! most families with only one kid can’t seem to be separated from the kid for more than 3 seconds. and i said “most” families, not all.

Junior is a typical boy for his age. I don’t see the problem here, Valka.

This kid isn’t a typical boy his age. These parents aren’t typical parents of the times. This strip has to be atypical to highlight the absurd.

If he’s a brat it’s because of poor parenting. I’ve been reading this strip for a while and his parents are total enablers.
