Do they not have food banks or other non-profits that serve the homeless in that town to donate too? I never give to people on street corners, but I do give to the non-profits that work to help them get off the streets.
Even better than cash: make up bags with non-perishable foods, e.g. granola bars, protein bars, and any kind of packaged fruit cups or pudding cups. We’ve done this for years, and when summer comes we include bottles of water. This is something you can give to an obvious addict while knowing that you helped them without feeding their addiction.
I once gave a panhandler one of those Sacajawea golden dollar coins. He looked at it and muttered, “Is that a dollar?” Yes, I told him. “Oh, well, okay.” Hey, you’re welcome.
I too am uncomfortable with the path of this strip and would much prefer to be reading something that would make me ROTFL but it did make me examine why I was feeling so disturbed. One explanation for me was that I could be the one standing on the street begging due to some unforeseen disaster. This strip also high-lited the conflict I feel every time I pass someone asking for a handout and I say no by ignoring that person as if they didn’t exist.I will continue to read one of my favourite strips.
I don’t give from the cars, there’s a huge fine for that locally. But I try to keep small bills on hand for encounters while walking. It does’t hurt me, and I live in a low wage area which has a large homeless population.

This is intended to make people aware of the homeless problem; however, all it’s doing is making me avoid the strip.

This is such a tasteless run for this cartoon. Shameful.
