Big Nate by Lincoln Peirce for September 16, 2011
Transcript:
You look upset, Nate. Principal Nichols totally ruined my idea! My plan was: I paint a giant mural in the cafetorium that will last for years!... Decades!... Forever! His plan is: All the kids in the school make individual paintings on pieces of poster board! Posterboard isn't forever. This is barely a step up dome pipe-cleaner sculpture.

Whats wrong with Pipe Cleaner Sculpture??

For anyone actually interested in history, Nate’s mural would be ghastly in many ways. After all, his idea of historically important characters is full of recent pop culture ‘stars’ and almost nothing else.As an ego-building tool for Nate, the one-man mural would be ideal, until his choices became passé. At that point, it would be a laughingstock. As a learning tool for his school, the principal’s idea is far superior. Nate’s ego wouldn’t allow him to see that, and it wouldn’t be funny anyway. I wonder who Mrs. Godfrey would want to see on that wall?

Is Nate going to sue or what?

I picture Nate on a scaffold, with an artist’s beret at a rakish angle, a paint-spattered smock, and a dreamy expression, as he paints Miley Cyrus gyrating with Justin Bieber…“It’s a commentary on the transient nature of our popular culture.” says a voiceover (probably Chad, off ‘camera’).

Why is it a carFtorium and not a CAFETERIA like when I was in school? Or even when my kids were in school, and that’s not that long ago. Did I miss something along the line?

get a life, nate.

No, I think it’s Nate who needs to get a life. I mean, this is a kid who thinks Reggie Bush is George W. Bush’s brother and thought Zachary Taylor was a middle linebacker for the Dolphins. The last thing I would want is him painting a historical mural.
