Big Nate by Lincoln Peirce for February 15, 2012
Transcript:
Now that I've written the lyrics to our new fight song, all we need to do is set 'em to music! Let's have an "enslave the mollusk" jam session after school, Francis! But we're a rock band! Fight songs are usually played by marching bands! Hm. Good point. Chad, my house. 3:30. Bring your oboe. Roger!

Man, they do have ways of keeping the Chadster in the loop, don’t they? Comic relief in a comic strip! Roger: Haw! HAW!!

Lincoln mentioned the Banana Slugs yesterday… It’s been the official mascot of the University of California Santa Cruz since 1986. The school tried to name its teams the Sea Lions, but the students hated it. (see http://www.ucsc.edu/about/mascot.html for more details)
That said, PLEASE don’t march with an oboe – those double reeds are killers and would tear up the oboist’s mouth (and wallet – they are EXPENSIVE!). My sister played one back in high school, but in pep band and marching band (on the rare occasion we tried THAT) she played a drum instead.

They mentioned it in Big Nate Strikes Again.

I am glad to see folks commenting that double reeds generally do not appear in marching bands. Violinistbynight’s spouse was an extreme exception. (Of course, nowadays one sees electric guitars and basses in field bands, which would make my band directors shudder if they saw it.)
