I think history is important because all the people who did amazing things made it possible for us to live like this now,and thank goodness for choclate.

I’m like that with random crap (especially music and presidential trivia). I can remember stuff regarding things I enjoy, but stuff I have to remember? NO WAI!

Lincoln, if you haven’t made the October strips for this year, you should have Nate’s dad hand out egg salad this year.

I can answer any LOTR or star wars question, but I don’t care about presidents or government trivial.

So, when the Red Sox swept the Rockies(my fav team) was THAT important?(yes, because the Babe Ruth curse finally sputtered, plus, Colorado made it to the WS, and never won a game. Classic)

I think Mr. Galvin pulled this same exact thing on Nate just a short while back! But alas, the driven point rang on similarly deaf ears THAT time, too!! Glee! GLEE!!

I’m the same way with dates and battles and bills. There was no cause and effect taught. No timeline. I saw a librarian take a grade 8 research project and turn it into a soap opera. “You were haveing an affair with him. She’s your mother-in-law.” It sounded so much like headlines on those trash newspapers. And it all sounded so interesting. Now I’m reading historical novels and learning so much more about what went on back then.

If we were to apply for all of our classes starting in kindergarten I’d have been in History, English, Math, and Art.

It’s not random at all. Francis knows how Nate’s brain works. He asks Nate an obscure question about baseball because he’s sure Nate will know the answer. And when Nate DOES know the answer, it contradicts his statement that his brain can’t retain factual information.

Instead of shutting down the comments section, I’d rather encourage people to police themselves and be kind to each other. The ability to disagree with someone without insulting them is an important life skill. So let’s all try to work on that.

Having said that, if comments continue to get out of hand, I’ll have to seriously consider shutting it down.

All he really needs is the right incentive, or for it to be made more interesting for him, like when he spent hours memorizing an answer key to a puzzle book Gina was reading, or got a 99 on the social studies final out of pure spite. Honestly, this is how my head works, too. In real life, the next step would be to use that knowledge to find new ways of coping. Of course, in 6th grade, it’s pretty hard to do that part on your own.

in higher level history courses, there tends to be less emphasis put on useless trivial info like specific dates, or obscure events. It actually gets easier and more interesting. I’m in a junior year AP history class and most of what we talk about is the by and large shifts and patterns of history, and how events and people shape it. I haven’t actually had to remember a date all year. My teacher made it very clear on day 1 that he had no intention on drilling us with trivia. We usually talk in depth about our topics in a way that doesn’t involve too many dates, which is great because that’s the stuff I never remember.
