Personal Note: Never mention anything about school to Nate during the last weeks of summer. I mean school already started here, so Nate’s somewhat lucky.
For the year that the virus struck, at my school, most of everyone’s final grades were omitted so everyone was allowed to move on because of the sudden change.
You know how they’re so record happy these day: most errors by a left-handed right fielder on Saturdays where the date is an odd number, and all that. Well, there’s one record I hold: most World Series on the most different teams for a right-handed third baseman who didn’t switch-hit and who never played for the Yankees. If I didn’t add that switch-hitting in there, I think maybe my old roommate, Frankie Frisch, would take the cake.
— Heinie Groh, major league baseball player from 1912 – 1927, quoted in The Glory of Their Times, by Lawrence S. Ritter (1966)
In the novels Nate got all B’s, an A in art and a D (oof) in Social Studies. I’m guessing he averages C- to D+ with a few F’s here and there in the comics. Talk about inconsistency.
I, personally, think it’d be cool if schools didn’t turn our growth into a couple letters and numbers, instead focusing on letting us learn and develop in our own way. I know a lot of kids that are sick of having their self-esteem determined by weather they can memorize facts or take notes, and I may or may not be one of them. I’d love learning if there weren’t so much pressure to be good at it!

Paradise. Instead you get judged by everyone else. And the connotations of what “you did well” and “you did alright” can be very confusing.

School without grades would have no meaning. You could sleep the whole time without consequences besides an annoyed teacher.

school should not be about grades, it should be about learning and trying to do your best, you should not be defined by a grade.
