Good Morning all and to answer the pressing question, since I posted first I was referring to myself as being Goofy, but I feel confident in saying that from time to time we all can fit the roll. I came to my computer this morning only to find that my last comment before, I crawled into bed, was still sitting in the comment box not posted. I guess I made a smart choice in retiring.

    @cleokaya, to continue from yestre:

I’ve never really been in the NE part of NoDak, although we used to have a house (St. Gall’s) up at Devil’s Lake. By now, I’m sure, the site is under water :-( but then we haven’t been there for something like 100 years…

I have been to Minot on occasion, and as far East as Belcourt (sp?). But I’ve been just about everywhere West of the River. Favorite quote: We’d driven up to the North Unit of Teddy Roosevelt Natnl. Park to see it. It’s only got a single paved road through to the end, which has a gorgeous overlook across a swath of badlands. Well, Br. Z was in the car, rooting around in the glove box (he had some pretty good dementia at the time). We said to him, “Come out and look at this wonderful view!”

His response? “Oh, I can’t be bothered to look in every nook and cranny!” Priceless!

bmonk, yes it is definitely a possibility that the house near Devil’s Lake is underwater. Whole towns have been lost. I like the western part of the state. I have covered just about every road in the state. I love the sense of humor of ND residents. I drove by a large pasture or field. Plopped in the middle of it was an old stove with the door hanging open. Next to it was a sign that had printed on it. “Open Range”.

Inside is an old TV, a crib with a doll inside and I believe also two dolls representing the parents. I think the sign there says “Fort Buford Model Home”.

does anyone know how to make a printer stop being stupid. it keeps eatting my paper and telling me paper jam. so i “unjam” it and then it says its still jamed. wonder if i tossed it out the door if that would fix it. :D

@tabbylynn, tossing the printer out the door/window might not do a thing for the printer, but it might help you! ;-) No, really, you might need that printer some day, assuming you can ever get it to work. And there might still be a scrap of paper up in there somewhere? Lots a luck! (or, as Astro used to say, “Rots a ruck!)

     •  Reply
  59. Frog4

Tabbylynn - some printers have multiple access doors that you have to open to check for jammed paper. Did the first jammed page tear? If so, you might have a small fragment stuck somewhere in the feeder that is triggering the error. Also make sure your paper guides fit snugly against the paper - if they’re too loose, the paper can come in a little crooked and lead to jamming.

    hth!

I guess I missed the whole problem that Joy is having with her phone, but I consider this site safe. I have reveal where I live in generalities and the fact that I mention I live on a lake narrows things down even more, but I feel secure enough. Granted, one can never be to careful, but life can’t be spent worrying and not living life with enjoyment. I could be off base here since, as I said, I don’t know what issues have come up with her phone. This is a nice group here and to lose one is a loss for all of us.

Tabbylynn, it is always sad to move away from your friends in high school and to go on to college. I went halfway across the country and then up into Canada for school and it was one of the highlights of my life. I made great new friends, I was my own boss and I became an adult through experiences I learned from being forced to make my own decisions and to learn from mistakes. You will do fine.

@tabbylynn, there’s always putting it on a disk and going to another machine with a printer. Or you can email it to someone (a friend nearby) to print out?

One thing I’ve found, there is always a way to work it. Not always a good way, but a way. I even got a PC to talk to a Mac once upon a time in the dark ages when they “couldn’t speak” to each other: sent the paper on email and reformatted.

It’s not just this site, it’s all of them like facebook, my space and several more. The thing is we’re just a bunch of nobodies (no offense anyone) who cares what we say, as long as it’s just our regular chitty-chat. If you want to take extra precautions, go ahead. Joy, everyday through everything we do we run a risk about finding out our personal into. But gocomics is, in my opinion safer than credit card purchases, bank info and the like. If someone were trying to get personal info on you I believe that they would seek avenues other than this. You are a special lady and I think you are safe here. But, you have to do what makes you comfortable at the end of the day.

Has anybody figured out who or what Ravensinger is? I certainly have nothing online that could be used against me in ID theft. I don’t use facebook and don’t even open emails or spam unless I’m pretty sure who it’s from. I had to attend a Realty appointment this morning and took the time to put some notes on paper, then as time permits put this in Word then cut and pasted it here.

Ravensinger said he was a regular with BT but nobody from BT was being followed, just some folks from Pibgorn site like Akenta mentioned. Ravensinger said he was being secretive to avoid links with his “other moniker”. NoFearPup pops up and says “I am Ravensinger BWAHAHAHAHA!”. A ruse or smoking gun just to throw us off? I searched for an altercation I remembered from a few months ago, May 4th, and Ravensinger mentions paying people to work for him and yesterday mentioned a conference; another smoking gun or hint. I Googled Ravensinger like Doctortoon was talking about Googling our screenames and I found nothing more than a bunch of links to some musician or band. I saw references yesterday about Ravensinger/NoFearPup but they don’t even sound alike. NoFearPup comes off as abrupt and callous speaking his mind where Ravensinger speaks assertively yet cautious. I rarely see the name or Abe’s pictures except for a few times on SOTU and then yesterday over here.

Joy, if you’ve never given a social security number, used a credit card or bank account number online over an unsecure connection, there is absolutely nothing to be afraid of. All you have to do is get a good anti-virus and spyware filter along with firewall and keep them updated and there will be no problems. I have my resume with contact information for business purposes and I’ve never had a hint of trouble.

Dry: I see that Joy is very upset, and I can understand why. I don’t feel threatened on this site, because like one of you said, “who’d be interested in what we have to say?”. I refuse to go on Face Book or My Space, however. They’re just not my thing, for one, and you do seem to be leaving yourself open to all kinds of nonsense. I did join ccdesan’s OTC group, and I worried about it for a while, but it’s a LOT smaller than Face Book. ;-)

Hi everyone!! Welcome back Joy, we’ve missed you.

I’ve only read about 100 comments so far, will catch up a little later. I did try and google Akenta and didn’t see anything scary. I had a couple links but they both took me to my profile, which just shows I post here a lot. Also had a few other sites I post as her (probably why I use her as an alias).

I’ve also googled my real name a few times. Not very interesting, except someone with my name works in the movie industry.

One thing you do want to do is google your phone number and make that nothing appears with that. (which I just did and found something :-( )

I do feel pretty safe on this site - don’t really post anything damaging. I think the closest thing would be the county I live in, but it’s a pretty big county.

I always work under the assumption that anything I do on the internet the government is watching (and anything I do at work, upper management is watching). I go with Danae’s theory that being good makes you invisible. It’s a little boring, but I don’t have a problem with that.

Howdy all! I read all the comments (whew)! I’m glad we all learned something. I was at the softball game. One of the umps saw lightening and stopped the game. They got the game going and it started pouring. They kept playing. Finally the game ended (we lost). Then no electricity! Traffic lights out, big accident at the intersection. Lights back on, dinner will be late!

Dry, I don’t think there is a way to stop it. That is why when you google a topic you can come up with hundreds of thousands of hits. I actually had an unusual thing happen to me about 4 years ago. I am and was a photographer. Back in the early 70’s I had a one night stand with a young lady passing through Vancouver. A year later I ran into her girlfriend who had been traveling with her. She mentioned that I had a child. I tried to do the right thing, but was rebuffed. 30+ years later, my daughter googles my name. We havenl’t met but correspond by email, because she googled my name and hit on a website that has my photos.

@johnnydoc5, you may be a worrywort, but you are not world class until you can worry about storm at the other end of the state, events that may never happen that will have totally obscure consequences that might be bad and so on.

Example: I was asked to get someone for the phone once. I tried, no answer. When I returned with the information he was not answering, the worrier got frantic. “Where could he be?”

“I don’t know. Is it an emergency?”

    “It might be!”

carmy & Dry, you two are pretty sharp cookies. No, I am not sure she is my daughter, but it is not her faulst. After her mother left me she was raped by a trucker and her mother never told her about that. I had to force her mother to tell her of the possiblilities when my “daughter” started getting close. I diid not want to lie to her. We haven’t had tests, she lives in Eastern Canada and I live on the west coast. But, I have no problem being a father figure. But, heck she is in her 30’s and has problems. I just try to be a stable source of info.

Oh…and yes, I have seen pictures and she looks nothing like me. But, as a baby, she looked exactly like me. It’s 50/50, but I want her to feel like I do not care if I am the father or not, but that I can care, because she hasn’t experienced someone who cares.

Cleo, you are doing a wonderful thing for this woman (who may or may not be your daughter). Given her age and what she is going through, why rock the boat? Having someone that genuinely cares for her should definitely be a great blessing for her (and you).

I try not to be a worrier, but I can’t help it. I have seen bad things and always worry that they could be worse. But I try not to let others see me worry. JFri, that is very selfish of your neighbors, not to let anyone who is willing to help ride along. Cleo, the cynic in me says not to trust her, but you know more than I do.
