so it has been awhile since i’ve had time to post. as you see being its 12:26am. It has been a long day. i was supposed to have 1 kid today ended up with 3. i had 4 for an hour… always fun had to be at lunch time when i was cooking. after lunch the one year old took a bath, then nap and when he woke up later his big brother (the middle kid) tosses the baby/tolder off the sofa… how nice… he landed on his head. cut it not bad Thank God. and all 3 start crying. the baby… well you know why, the oldest bc his brother is hurt and he dosent want him to die. the middle bc hes going to get in trouble. what is a girl to do? i handled it well used to blood it dosent bother me and i had Ana bust her head open already so i knew what to do.

Morning tribe! It was a wild night we experienced, but (I think) we made it through okay. You know the wind is strong when you can see the house moving, and the windows flexing. I heard there were “several small tornadoes” in my county, but so far, only tree damage reported. Further to the west, a historic building lost its roof. More than one semi-truck got blown over while driving. We lost our internet, then our power for about and hour. I figured the internet wouldn’t be back this morning, but amazingly, it is!

We have some cute little bunnies in our neighbourhood - they and the deer are hated about equally by the gardners! One of the neighbours actually feeds them but luckily, unlike in Victoria, the predators are around enough to keep the numbers down. RMom I don’t know if I could live in tornado country but we on the west coast are always concerned about the big earthquake.

The suburb I grew up in once passed a cat leash law. Within a few years, the squirrels and rabbits were going crazy. Dad had to get a little air pistol (.17 cal) to keep them down to reasonable numbers. That’s the problem when there are no natural predators.

We have a similar problem in our local National Park (Teddy Roosevelt) with the elk herd.

Dawn - At least to get away from a tornado, all I have to do is head to the basement. Plus, we have enough warning in time to take cover. The biggest advantage of tornadoes compared to earthquakes & hurricanes, is that the damage is limited to a fairly small area. Two nights ago, a house got hit, but their workshop that was close by didn’t. Therefore, people who weren’t affected by the storm are quick to offer help. I’ve never had a family member or a friend get their house destroyed by a tornado, but I know two families who have experienced significant damage due to hurricanes. (They lived in FL at the time.) It is a really small number of homes that get damaged due to storms in KS, unless you count hail storms, and that is usually confined to the exterior of a house. It is just that you don’t want to be above ground, if you happen to be in the path of a tornado, so we take cover. Death rates are quite low now that the meterologists & the media get the warnings out in sufficient time, and most of the population know what they’re supposed to do in the case of a tornado. (Most deaths occur because they think “it won’t happen to me”.)

@johnnydoc, caught your comment yesterday on the weather. You can use the cheap weather indicator I’ve seen sometimes: a piece of twine.

    When it’s wet, it’s raining.

    When it’s icy, it’s cold.

    When it sways, it’s windy.

When it’s gone, it’s a tornado (or hurricane, etc.)

bmonk - One of the “windy” jokes about KS is that the airports don’t use windsocks - they use wind chains. A piece of twine swaying would be considered a calm day here.

@cleo, yestre you spoke about the guy who invented the intermittent circuit for windshield wipers; just last month I met his divorced wife. The court case was a farce: the lawyers for Ford or Crysler (I forget which) argued that the circuit was just electronic components, none of which were new and so not patentable. In response, the inventor’s lawyer began reading from Tale of Two Cities, asking which word was new and therefore copyrightable.

We have a local municipal airport, errr, a grassy strip with two tie-downs and a windsock. Once a year, they put up a new windsock. That, plus the annual rent, makes for a cheap airport. And the owner gets to grow hay on it to boot!

bmonk We’ve got one of those in our housing development. The owner flies too frequently, to let the prairie grass grow enough to bale, but it could if he didn’t keep it mowed. There are a lot of grass airstrips around Wichita - many of the airplane employee clubs give members highly discounted flying lessons. Coupled with a lot of treeless flat ground, it isn’t difficult for a private pilot to have his/her own runway.

We get some every year, but not as many as, say, Kansas-Nebraska, or Texas. It’s from the cool Canadan air meeting the warm, wet Gulf Coast air. Most storms head east: Northeast or Southeast. Every so often we get one going backwards, towards the west. A few years back, the Bismarck-Mandan area had 5 or 6 tornados going northwest on November 2nd!

Yeh, we have basements, loads of them.

Naah, tornados are fascinating even when you live up here. As RRAmom said 6 eventful hours ago, there’s really no need for people to die, unless they have inadequate shelter, because they get warnings out quite well, with plenty of time to get under cover. More people die these days, I think, when they try to get videos of the weather, or think, “It’s not coming here.” Maybe if we had more tornados, we’d get more tired of them.

Besides, I agree with Rmom: it’s not like a wildfire or hurricane or earthquake that hits such a wide swath of territory. A tornado is quite limited in its effect.

@Margueritem, I remember a few in Chicagoland too. Tinley Park, about 1986?

Just looked it up: On 4/21/1967, a category 4 (max. wind speeds 207-260 mph) tornado 6.9 miles away from the village center killed 33 people and injured 500 people and caused between $5,000,000 and $50,000,000 in damages.

I was a young boy then; when we went to see the debris some days later, it was still quite impressive…

Hello Everyone! I’ve been catching up on the comics and news. We’re about to get a thunderstorm. I think it’s that time of the year when we get one almost every afternoon. Marg, I’m not too wrung out yet. Maybe by Thursday it will hit me. I was in Chicago when we had a bad storm hit downtown, I think it was in ‘92. They had the big celebration in the park, Taste of Chicago (?). Anyway, everyone had to run for cover at the park. I was on the 9th floor of a building and when I saw my co-workers standing at the windows, I told them they needed to stay away because a window might bust out. They thought I was crazy until at that moment a window (or two) busted out across the street. Papers were flying all over the place. Also, the Sears Tower which was also across the street lost 2 or 3 windows too. Glass and papers flying everywhere.

Carmy, I’ve not been in a tornadic storm when near windows, but I remember being in one near the Missouri River. The plate glass windows were flexing in the storm winds, and we all hurried to a more protected place. Luckily, none of the windows cracked, but elsewhere some roof rocks (about 1-2 inch diam.) were sent through windows, and a cinder-block wall around a air-conditioning plant was torn down. Still, it was exciting to see!

bmonk: That’s a great map. I see that the eastern part of CO gets a lot of tornados, and that they even get some in CA. The western states don’t get that many compared to the rest of the country.

Tinley Park is close to Oak lawn, so it may have done some damage there, too.

I think it’s interesting how altitude affects tornadoes. Note how the Appalachians and the Ozarks are lighter, and the similar pattern when you hit the Rockies, as in Colorado and Wyoming.

I found that interesting too, bmonk. I have only been in one tornado, and it was a “straight-line” tornado. The wind speed was mild, compared to some, (80mph) I think. Gusts were stronger.

    I slept right through it.

When I was in high school, we were sitting in the living room of some friends of my parents. They had one of those 1950s modern houses with the picture window that went all the way down to the floor. I looked out the window and the top of a small tree in their front yard was going in a circle. Next lawn chairs and garbage cans started flying down the street. My Mom said, “Look at the car!” Our car was parked next to the house, and it was lifted off of the driveway a foot or two. Our ears popped. We all just sat there stunned and it was over. The car windows had scratches in them caused by flying gravel, and a neighbors garage was moved two feet off of its foundation. A huge oak tree was torn up in the local park. It was referred to as a ‘big wind’, because no one saw a funnel cloud. I still say it was a tornado.

Marg That sounds like the tornado going through my home town in Iowa in the late 60s. We lived at one of the highest points in town so it skipped right over us, but rooted trees down 1st Av (the main drag) for miles. Very little other property damage though.

Shika “Scarred” is what I meant but I agree…either will work. And you probably should be worried about me, but not for the reasons you may think. giggle

Well, I spent the day in town with the major goal of my trip to stop chipmunks, squirrels and raccoons from emptying my bird feeders of all the expensive seed. they have been tearing them down or just plain scarfing up the food overnight and with the squirrels and chipmunks, all day long. We’ll see it all the expensive additions hinder them even in the slightest.

Probably too late posting this, but when I was working as Head Teller, (don’t know what they are called now!) on Ft. Bragg Army Base, they had storm warnings out and a tornado warning as well. It was a military pay day so you can imagine HOW BUSY we were!! The teller lines were stacked up out the door! Anyway, when we closed the doors at 12 noon for the lunch break, we discovered a tornado had landed across the street and blown the roof off our competitive bank rival First Citizens Bank. No one was hurt thank goodness! We didn’t even notice or hear it because we were so busy!!!

It is tough though with ones that can hop from tree to tree. I swear though, when we came home from Seattle after leaving the garage doors open, that cleo was in the garage with the raccoon eating the dog food the raccoon had tipped over.

Doc et al with cats I swear that cats can hang in the air shifting their position to land on their feet. I saw a documentary showing falling cats. They twist in the air and always land on their feet.

I had a book before my big book purge (see AAH for definition). It was all photographs of cats DANCING with the writer of the book. They really are quite musical it seems.

RRAmom Your mention of Crazy Cat, C.C. for short reminds me of “Black Cat”, B.C. for short. She wasn’t really ours, because we had Stormy then, and that’s all dad would allow. But we fed (well I fed her) out back. She had one litter of kittens after another. One fell down a pipe and we had the fire department get it out with a lasso. Caused quite a sensation in the area, and one parishioner told us it was our fault for encouraging the mother to stick around. She had a point. Of course, I wasn’t supposed to feed her.

Doc, my kitty Molly, the one who chases anything and bounces around, has the softest hair! She’s a short hair. All black except for a FEW very white hairs on her chest! she is so sweet and loving and goofy! Her previous owners decided they wanted a dog instead and she was pregnant so they called ROFF and said if they didn’t come get her they were going to set her outside and let her fend for herself, in the dead of winter! I saw her kitties photos, 3 of tehm all black, they were so cute! Anyway, she came home with us from ROFF! Of our three cats she has the closest personality to my Hannah, my first avatar. I’m not trying to replace Hannah but I think Molly came to us for a reason, if you get my drift! AND I THINK I TOLD YOU ALL THIS BEFORE, didn’t I?

All this talk of cats reminds me of Derek Tangye who wrote a whole series of books about the flower farm he and his wife Jeannie ran after the war in Cornwall England.

I just loved his books. H e wrote about his cats as they came along, Monty, Lama, Ambrose and Cherry- orange, black, orange, black cats respectively. He could spend a page or two just desribing their antics.

There must have been about 12 books in the series- thelast one was the saddest- his wife died prematurely of cancer, I believe.
