It’s primarily a Southern thing, dating from late in the American Civil War. Food was hard to come by in the Confederacy, and someone figured out that, if you soak dried corn in a lye solution (cattle food), it re-hydrates. You grind that up and cook it, you got a relatively innocuous grainy paste that is somewhat nutritious. It’s really only worth eating if you put something with actual flavor in it.

@hymenoxis, as I understand it, the lye also helps make the corn starch easier to absorb–otherwise, much of the food value simply passes through. The native Americans did the same thing by putting a bit of fire-ash into the pot when they cooked their cornmeal.

Good afternoon, doc, Terry & Dawn.

Hymie - Thanks for the explanation of what grits actually are. I’ve heard of grits for years, but since I’m not adventurous when it comes to new foods, I’d never eaten them. The descriptions I got never made it sound delicious, and now I know why. KS is close enough to the South to get things like chicken fried steak, biscuits & gravy, and BBQ, but it is rare to see grits on a menu around here. Of course, I’ve traveled plenty in the South, but could always find something else to order on the menu!

Mr. Carlin - again - describing the experience of a Northener, after ordering ham & eggs for the 1st time, in a diner ‘way down South:

Looks at his plate: “Hey, what’s that white stuff???”

Fry cook, from behind the counter: “Hail, them’s grits!”

    “Uhhh, they’re movin’, man……….”

In MY experience - 35 yrs in Florida - genuine grits are completely without taste. Salt, pepper & butter - all applied in liberal amounts - make the stuff taste very good (kind-a like salt, pepper & butter on a spoon).

    Mmmm, mmmm, good eatin’!

bmonk, I wouldn’t, but if I need something to liven up the lefse or grits, that’s what I’ll do! I posted at PB one time to Risitas how I love subway tuna subs LOADED with hot jalapenos, and his reply was, “a jalapeno sub with a little tuna to hold it together!”

In summer, I raise Scotch Bonnets and Habaneros, I sneeze, weez, burn my hands even with gloves on, when I clean them for eating BUT ITS WORTH IT!

I gotta agree with the jalapeno sentiment. And, for the love of breakfast cereal, y’all quit that hugging stuff. I had to fight through a spate of that back in my old MSN1.0 days…the chat room I frequented became infected with hugging, and it became an excersize in one-upsmanship. Quite tiresome, really. Nothing beats a knowing nod and a heartfelt “howdy”, in my humble.

My wife gave birth next to a woman that she has kept in touch with. Both gave birth to boys who are now in their mid - twenties. This late winter, the other mother’s son, who was a videographer for the X games, was at a party and dived into a lap pool, or a shallow pool anyways. He is now a quad. It is such a shame when things like this happen to people. One moment of indiscretion is all it takes.

hyme - when you finish on the ship, I have a little work over here that you might want to take care of. I like someone who takes it upon themselves to be the cleaner. Now, if I could just find someone who would take it upon themselves to be the lawn mower, the pruner, the plant digger, the weed eater, the edger, the waterer, etc. Then I would be set.

Shake it with ice….shake it like a porn star, until you begin to regret your choice of profession, then strain it into a glass so cold that scientists follow you around asking how you got the glass so cold. Serve with a smile, and I’ll tip you twice the cost.

    Chop, chop….I’m very thirsty.

‘Night, Akenta, I think I was the first to nickname Hymenoxis. Had no idea of the urban dictionary meaning - I don’t believe it exists in Canada but after research realized it’s not in the best of taste for those in the States. I hope, Hymenoxis that you will accept the nickname Nox or Hy.

I don’t remember if I told you all that my husband plays the guitar. He had an electric one, but now he has an acoustic. Anyway, when he is out at sea, they often have like little concerts and such for the sailors to participate in and enjoy. Well, my husband participates. He likes to play what he calls “The Love Song”. So he will tell everyone that he is going to play them that. Then he starts playing Ted Nugent’s “Wang Dang Sweet…” He really gets into the song and he howls and everything. You would laugh your arse off if you saw that.

Uh Hy– No more hugs for you. Not until you explain that. I wouldn’t know a gay hug if it reared up and bit me. My cousin’s best friend is a mom whose significant other is a mom, and together they are two “moms” to the sweetest little girl. I just had supper with them.

Akward, yes. But I have no problem hugging any of them. My female cousin is married to a man and they have two girls.

Anyways, I’m a gal who likes men, but I figure, live and let live. As I suspect you do too.
