Okay breakfast and so soon after our road trip. Well, I have made smoked salmon hash, with garlic roasted potatoes and scrambled eggs. I have corn bread cooked in bacon grease. Doctor Toon supplied us with a tank of nuclear coffee. I have cognac and also fruit juices. Sliced fruit is in the cooler.

i’ll have some potatoes, eggs, and corn bread, please. and just a little bit of the smoked salmon hash (because it sounds too good to pass up). i’ll skip the nuclear coffee, for now, because i need to get up early in the A.M. to go to church (for my Dad’s sake) and have to sleep. i’ll be back in the late A.M. to see how everyone’s doing. TTFN and a hug for ((Dry)) if that’s allowed to newbies (it’s only a little one. i don’t want to be pushy.) gone

Marg, sorry to hear about your fall. I hope you aren’t to stiff and sore. Good morning Tribe. I missed the ride but was there in spirit. We’re in the vacation belt of Canada and I think everyone I know has decided to come here for the last of the summer so I haven’t been able to get on very often. But I’ve tried to read most of the posts. Cleo and Bigg, thanks for the breakie. I’ll have a little of everything. But I’ll pass on the cigars, thanks JFri. Love the smell in the outdoors (nostalgia) but hate it inside and on clothes! You were talking about cars earlier, MoPar and Terry and I’ll remind you I had to crank my Morris Minor to start it! Shika and Carmy, I hope I’ll catch up to you tomorrow(today) - if I have a chance to get back on to this machine.

That’ll be the hardest on my dad (it’s the last remaining part of my great grandfather’s homestead from the 1890’s and he still lives in the house he was born in). I remember being shocked when he got his first glasses and later a hearing aid.

Speaking of coffee. I never like coffee until I went into a Seattle coffee shop and ordered espresso. It turns out, all the coffee I had tried before then was to weak. Once I had the first espresso I never turned back. I started drinking quadruple lattes, then eventually did away with the milk.

DFrog - I remember being shocked when my dad couldn’t reach as high as I could. (To put something away on a shelf.) He was 6’2” in his prime, and I’m only 5’5”. He died the following month. It seems like we don’t notice our parents’ aging, and then when we do, it is a real shocker! It has been so difficult watching my mom. She used to be very active - helped build our house, went on several foreign mission trips to help build churches (and she preferred the construction jobs), sewed everything you could imagine, and was still driving the day before her first stroke. Now she’s completely bedridden, sleeps most of the time, doesn’t talk unless she absolutely has to, etc. She’s also lost a lot of weight, probably about 100 pounds. She has some dementia due to the strokes, but for the most part knows everyone and what’s going on around her when she’s awake. Watching our parents age isn’t an easy thing to do.

Cleo - That’s an interesting way to learn to drink coffee! But since I don’t even like coffee flavored candy, I’m not sure it would work for me. I’m doing okay without caffeine most days, if I need some, Cokes are sufficient. Now that I’m 50, I don’t think I’ll bother taking up the coffee habit. But it would have come in handy earlier in life.

cleo - I used to have a boss who drank her coffee iced. My husband only drinks 1 or 2 cups of coffee first thing in the morning, so the temp doesn’t bother him much. Since it gets so hot here each summer, most places have central a/c, so drinking a hot beverage isn’t a problem unless one is going to be out in the heat in the middle of the day. I run on the cold side, but the only hot beverage I’ll drink is hot chocolate, and that’s not real often, probably because I don’t think about fixing a cup. If I’m really feeling cold, I prefer soaking in a tub of hot water to get warm.

RedHatt - I wondered. It is pretty rare to have a teacher’s strike in KS. Schools around here usually start in mid to late August. Kansas is a “right-to-work” state, so other than the aircraft plants, strikes here are pretty rare. It does help that our cost-of-living is a lot lower than on either coast, so our wages stretch farther.

I’m still homeschooling my youngest (final year), so that limits my schedule considerably. At least my sons are old enough now that if I’m not needed to teach, I can leave them home and go somewhere. I’m going to head out later today, as soon as I get the schoolwork done that my son needs me to do with him.

Back growing up, plastic garbage cans were illegal, not because there were any garbage fires, but because there might be garbage fires. Never mind that they were lots quieter, harder for the “sanitation engineers” to dent and crush, cheaper, easier to use…

bmonk - In Wichita, all the sanitation companies provide large plastic carts (with their colors & name on them). Wichita currently allows multiple companies to serve the same block (nice to have the competition to keep prices reasonably low), so that helps their employees know which houses to stop at. They are rather nice carts, since you have to drag in out to the curb once a week, and they can hold several normal trash cans’ worth. There is a trash hauler in our neighborhood, but since it is legal to burn (unless it is too dry) our trash, I’m too cheap to pay to get ours hauled. We have to take our non-burnables in, but that’s only about once a year, and $20 or so for a load.

RRA During my first marriage we sold a ‘62 Ford pickup, 3-on-the-tree (anyone remember that?), to buy 2 acres south of Wichita to build a house on. I loved that house, I loved living in the country, I LOVED that truck (hated to sell it), but unfortunately the husband didn’t last. I had to leave it all behind. The last time I was in Wichita was to auction my mother’s belongings and sell her house. BTW, we’re about the same age.

We went into a bakery in Italy some years ago and he ordered in Italian. Turned out the owners were from Germany, and didn’t know much Italian. No problem! He switched to German and continued to order. I had no idea what anyone was saying, but I was happy with what I ended up with. Heck - it was a bakery!

I believe engineers call that the “Bigger Hammer” principle.

Reminds me of the Navy CPO who extensively trained his ratings on the various wrenches and the proper use of each kind. The next day, one of his workers asked him for a “big old wrench”

The CPO asked, “How big, and which kind?”

“Oh, it doesn’t really matter. I’m gonna use it for a hammer anyway.”
