    DAAAAAAHH STRIP:

As Paul Simon so very aptly put it, on a tune from the “Still Crazy After All These Beers” LP:

God bless the goods we were given. God bless the U. S. of A. And God bless our standard of livin’ - Let’s keep it that way, And we’ll all have a good time!

Suddenly, another lyric springs into a durn-near demento-ed head:

“I get Misty, just a-holdin’ yer paw!!!

Once again, to Drystyha (according to The Etiquette of the Tribe, as well as my own concern & warm, fuzzy feelings for my dear friend & family):

Good Sunday all. Costco chicken with mac salad and fresh tomatoes for all.

Piers Anthony had a variation on this game in one of his books. The elements there were water, sand and fire. Too bad the merman played one way and the dragon played another. This misunderstanding led to dragon eats merman (oops).

quick note to cleo. your post on C & H (where yukoner had folks listing their home areas) reminded me of my great vacation trip last fall. i spent a night in Jasper (the hotel had a great home brew but a lousy bed) and deliberately drove through princeton, bc (and had lunch at the local Dairy Queen) because my oldest nephew graduated from Princeton, NJ. i spent 3.5 weeks on what i refer to as my “Drive By tour of Western Canada” and enjoyed it more than almost anything i’ve done in my life.

Hi, cleo! I’ve barely been in Canada. Once, my in-laws drove me & my oldest son (then 3 yr old) across to see from the Canadian side of Niagara Falls. The HQ for the company my hubby works for is in Ontario (I think). So he’s been there, and maybe if he has to go again, I’ll get to go with him this time. Of course, that means I’ll need to get my passport updated as well.

hi cleo. i spent a week or so driving around in the rockies, up the icefields parkway from canmore and banff to jasper then into bc, passing kamloops, and lillooet on the way through whistler to vancouver. i didn’t see princeton until the way back, but have a lovely photo of a rainbow that showed up as i was entering the similkameen valley. i eventually meandered through the okanagan back up to mt. revelstoke before driving south to the crowsnest pass to get back to alberta.

Actually, RRAmom, i AM Canadian (to riff on an old beer commercial). i’ve lived on the northwest edge of Toronto, ON for over 5 decades, now. as i get older, i find more time (and spare cash) for travelling, and will eventually see this country from coast to coast to coast (only have one more to go). when i finally stop putting it off and get my passport, i’ll also visit more of the USA. i’d love to see the grand canyon, and mount rushmore (and stone mountain, GA as well). there’s also a spot on the lewiston side of the bridge to the border crossing that i need to go to in order to finally get the photo i want of the niagara river reaching lake ontario.

yyyguy - Sorry I misunderstood. Thought you were from the U.S. I’m hoping I’ll get a little more time to travel in the next few years. I’ve been a full-time mom (including homeschooling) since our oldest was born 20 years ago. Our youngest is starting his last year of high school, so I’ll have a different occupation next year. At least they’re old enough now for me to take some trips without them, but with teaching, I can only be gone for so long. I’m hoping to just do substitute teaching after I’m done with homeschooling, so I’ll have time to join my hubby on his business trips.

Ma’at - Yes, I do take my POA seriously. Ever since Dad passed away, I’ve had to do a lot that he took care of for the two of them. I’ve been thankful they did most of the legal stuff before he passed on, and the rest that I thought was needed done before Mom had her big stroke. It has been a little rough since I’m the baby of the family, that my older siblings don’t always realize I’m legally in charge. But my hubby & I (with our kids), spent one evening a week with my parents for over 15 years, and I called Mom 6 days a week & chatted until her stroke. Rest of the kids might call home once a month, some even less. So Mom & I have been very close, share the same values (unlike most of my sibilings), and have discussed a lot of the end-of-life “what if” questions. My parents were always ready to lend a helping hand, so now it is time to return the favor.

Ours will set it up so that one has the POA, and another one takes it over in the event the first one resigns, dies, etc. Yep, I’ve had to go through three real estate closings already. One more to go eventually.

I love Sleeman’s. The very first time that I had it was in a beautiful old lodge between Banff & Jasper, that was on a lake. We entered the old log building with the bright red roof and walked into their vast empty dining room. For lunch we ordered two bison burgers, rare and two Sleeman’s Creme ale. While awaiting our burgers we had our first ale, by the time the beer was finished our burgers still hadn’t come out. The waitress came by and we said “You did tell the chef that we wanted our burgers rare, didn’t you?” She assured us that she had, so we ordered two more Sleeman’s. As we were finishing our second beer, the burgers arrived, so overcooked it was like eating sawdust, but we loved the Sleeman’s and I have been drinking it off and on ever since. Some stores here carry it.

YGuy and Cleo my favorite drive in the North America is the Banff Jasper highway and we have travelled almost every highway! But for places to see, Mount Chief Crazy Horse in ND - even unfinished is a true marvel as is Bryce Canyon near the Grand Canyon. Also loved Washington DC and the Smithsonian and the monuments and the beach between Panama City Beach and Pensacola. And of course the Oregon and Washington coasts. Of course Vancouver Island is a gem. And I do love the Maritimes! Actually I could go on and on - I love travelling. Next will be Europe.

@cleokaya: if my memory serves me correctly, you’re talking about lake louise. i don’t remember any other “log building on a lake” between Banff & Jasper, and i think the only other place with a restaurant of any sort was at Saskatchewan River Crossing - which didn’t have a lake, but did have a $20 fast food lunch which consisted of a bacon cheeseburger, small fries, and a small soft drink. even Banff was cheaper (and there, I ate in the restaurant on top of Sulphur Mountain - a tourist place which figured to be more expensive).

Dawn - Actually Crazy Horse is in SD, but it is impressive and when finished will be larger than Rushmore. On Sept. 15th my wife and I are flying to WA DC and will spend just under 3 weeks there and in Virginia. My wife is a history buff and is enthralled with Thomas Jefferson. One of the weeks there we be staying in a condo near Monticello, his home. I to love the Smithsonian. I really like the Royal Provincial Museum in Victoria.

It is distinquished by a bright red roof. The lodge is old and may be a fishing lodge. It is one of the few places to stay between Banff & Jasper other than Lake Louise.

I have an interesting story about Lake Louise though. I was traveling back to Hay Lakes, AB for my aunt’s funeral. I was on the road with my dog Kaya, my two cousins, plus the family of one of those cousins, including her husband and two daughters. We checked motels all around the Lake Louise area, then for the heck of it decided to check out the Lake Louise Lodge. As it was off season we were able to get a 2 story corner penthouse suite facing the lake, with plenty of room for all of us. It ended up being cheaper than several rooms in more modest motels. It was pure luxury and my dog got to have a little token attached to her collar, announcing her as a guest of the Lake Louise Lodge.

Dawn - What is included in the treasures of the Bristish Museum exhibit? The first memory of traveling on the highway between Banff & Jasper was in 1959. At that time the Columbia Icefields was still up to the edge of the highway.

yyyguy - Nope, this lodge was closer to Jasper, but far south of the community itself, on it’s own, with nothing else around. Many kilometers south.

DawnAvril had i known how nice num-ti-jah was, i may not have driven back from Lake Louise to Banff to spend the night before i headed on towards Jasper. (it was getting late and Lake Louise was either too expensive or “no vacancy” so i had to find an alternative.) quite the adventure, and i thank you and cleokaya for letting me relive some of it. Unfortunately, it’s high time i finished up my chores, so i’ll have to say good night. no Shika move for me.

Good Night, YGuy but look into Picassa for sharing pics with friends. It is what I use and like it! Enjoyed the memories!

Dawn - Good job on Num - ti-jah. I never would have thought of the name until you mentioned it. It’s funny how talk of Sleeman’s Ale leads us into a whole wonderful discussion of the beauty of Canada.

Cleo it includes over 300 artifacts from the British Museum. Should be wonderful - everyone I have spoken to has enjoyed it.

okay. ONE Shika move. cleokaya, the Columbia Icefields are still visible from the road, but are now roughly a half-mile back from the road side. they put you into a regular bus to go up to a transfer point, which is where you board the ice bus that takes you out on the glacier. one of many incredible experiences. Peytoe Lake was also extremely impressive, though i had to push my physical limits to get to the overlook. the “short 10 minute walk from the parking lot” described in the brochure was almost straight up - not an easy hike for a 350 lb. plus man with arthritic knees - but i made it and it was worth it. what a view! (maybe my next avatar). and now “good night” for real.

Dawn - I just scanned back to previous comments and saw that I had missed your question about my rib. It has still got me baffled. The day before yesterday it seemed on the mend, yesterday was the worst yet and today is the best. I think the key is to just avoid lifting and extending myself to much. Thanks for asking.

It is funny how memory plays tricks on us. I had thought that Num-Ti-Jah was much closer to Jasper than to Lake Louise.

Cleo—I broke my rib(s) several times during sports and in the service. It can take a long time to heal and re-bruising it is way to easy. Maybe you’ve broke some before, if you did sorry for too much info.

Lonewolf - I split my ribcage open in junior high school and that was all tendons or cart. but not bone. My wife has all these outdoor chores and because of her spinal cord injury I do most of the heavy ones. I will have to take some time off. It is tough with her because she doesn’t let anything stop her. It is pretty impressive when a person can be hurt so bad that they need a cane, yet keeps so in shape that her muscles art cut.
