“Little” isn’t the word I would apply here. The several times I have seen them here they look like the largest bee I’ve ever seen. I never tried to strike one but they are impressive for something so small. By the time I had figured what it was it was gone.
Oh my God does this bring back a memory. In the late 50’s or early 60’s my male neighbor was swinging a badminton racket at dusk in his back yard, we asked him what he was doing. He said he was trying to kill a hummingbird. We asked why on earth he was doing that, he replied he was convinced that hummingbirds could sting you. As we walked away my Dad was shaking his head and muttering, “what an idiot”. You can’t make up stupidity.

We have lots of hummingbirds — which I really love. Of course, we have wasps, too, but they don’t really bother me, so I don’t bother them.

Some of the carpenter bees around here look as big as hummingbirds

I saw hummingbirds in late April this year. On Vancouver Island.

I don’t think it would be good to “swat” at a wasp with a tennis racket.

It could have been hummingbird moth.
