If a dog doesn’t have the word “Retriever” in it’s name, you’re barking up the wrong tree.

True, there are other dogs that will retrieve a ball, and some retrievers that will not, I suppose, but just couldn’t pass up that “barking up the wrong tree” analogy.

Pre-beagle I had a very adorable and highly intelligent mutt of unknown origin. People would come over and ask me if my dog would play fetch. I would say no, but she will teach you how. It took them several times of throwing the ball to the dog and then going and getting it to do it again before they would catch on. I really think my dog did that deliberately and found it highly entertaining.

I adopted my sweet girl (she rescued me) because she was overly shy but I spied a playful side in her when she spotted a monkey brain, aka mock orange fruit. It was a trick to steal my heart I am afraid because she REFUSED to play fetch ever after, though sometimes she would humor me once or twice indoors only with a toy. She always grew bored with it quickly though and would leave for her favored activity of nibbling on one of her beloved stuffies as I retrieved the toy I insisted on throwing once again.

When my dog was in the mood to play ball, I’d throw it for her, she’d run after it and bring it back ….. but not all the way. She’d stop about a foot in front of me, then push it to me with her nose and waited for me to throw it again. We’d do this over and over again — every single time — until she got tired and didn’t want to play anymore. She crossed the Rainbow Bridge a little over three years ago at the age of 17 and I still miss her every single minute of every single day. That sweet little girl of mine was nothing but pure love, joy and sunshine! ♥
