Parents Who Have Mastered the Back-to-School Send-Off
by Reed JacksonEvery year, it seems like summer gets shorter and shorter, and the new school year starts sooner than the one before. While this is often music to parents' ears, most children have a much less optimistic outlook on going back to school. For some helpful tips in transitioning the kiddos out of summer mode, we've consulted with the parents of GoComics, our resident experts on the back-to-school send-off:
Tip #1: Lure your kids in with the new school swag.
Waft those enticing school supply fumes.
Tip #2: Never (and we mean never) let them go shopping on their own. A budget holds zero relevance during those back-to-school sales.
It's definitely OK to splurge on them a little, but never lose sight of the bargain rack. After all, you know kids: They're likely to outgrow something in the amount of time it takes to get home from the store, so why have to take a second mortgage out on the house to buy school clothes?
Tip #3: Similar to the feeling you get when you see the price increase on school supplies from last year, transitioning from summer vacation into back-to-school mode can threaten to send your child into shock. It's best to ease them into it.
Tip #4: As kids get older, their lists of extracurricular activities get longer. In the fight against over-scheduling, forming alliances with other parents will save your life.
Tip #5: As we all know, desperate times call for desperate measures. It's hard enough to get the kids back to school already, but if your child is anything like our precocious Calvin, sometimes psychological warfare is the only way.
All humor aside, back to school is an exciting and nostalgic time to be a parent. Every year they get older, so enjoy the shopping, caravanning and ornery excuses for what they are - your kid still being a kid.
