Andy Warhol: His Fifteen Minutes Will Last Forever
by Reed JacksonAndrew Warhol was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on August 6, 1928, exactly 87 years ago today. We know him better as Andy Warhol: leader of the 1960s pop art movement, with an incredible talent for creating compelling artwork from life's most commonplace things. Famous for his ability to blur the line between fine art and mainstream aesthetics, this is the man who picked up a Campbell's soup can and transformed it into one of the most iconic works of pop art in American history.
Aside from his well-known artwork, Andy Warhol is also credited with saying, "In the future, everyone will be famous for fifteen minutes," which inspired the now-popular phrase, "fifteen minutes of fame" (along with several comic spoofs):
Although he may not have anticipated it at the time, Mr. Warhol's fame has lasted much longer than fifteen minutes. His life's work continues to influence creatives to this day, including many of our GoComics cartoonists.
On the flip side, Andy Warhol was also inspired by one of your favorite comic characters (what? Yes!). GoComics' very own Nancy received a Warhol-style pop art makeover in 1961:
Happy birthday to the late and forever-great Andy Warhol!
