Beating Adulthood with the Help of GoComics
by Reed JacksonToday began like any other day for me; going about the usual routine of snoozing my alarm a few times, finally waking up, then starting the process of hair and makeup. As I looked in the mirror this morning, though, I noticed something that I could swear was not there yesterday "... a gray hair; front-and-center on my scalp, glaring at me, as if to say, "This is it, pal - you're officially an adult."
Of course, as a self-sufficient working girl who no longer celebrates summer vacation or wakes up without coffee, I had already resigned myself to adulthood. I traded in the joys of summer and sleeping in for my own apartment and a job that I love. So don't get me wrong, I love being a "grown-up," but with grown-up freedoms come grown-up responsibilities, like bedtimes and bills, and I'm feeling a little sentimental (and, yes, a little dramatic) about saying goodbye to my childhood.
Luckily for me, though, I work at GoComics, and read through tons of comics all the time that make me feel better about my journey into adulthood. One, in particular, that has become of a favorite of mine is Sarah's Scribbles by Sarah Andersen. Her ability to put a humorous spin on the harsh realities of growing up makes it obvious that she gets it.
Like learning to cook, for example. How has my mother done it so well for so long?!
Even harder, was learning to budget and, therefore, saying goodbye to my shoe addiction "...
Or the shock of actually missing finals week, something I once thought to be impossible, until "...
Then there's the fact that what was once known as "free time" is now known as "time to clean" and "... I "... actually "... enjoy it?
Finally and foremost, there's my alarm clock, or what has become known as the bane of my existence, since I can't ever seem to get enough sleep before it interrupts.
Like I've said, there are plenty of ups to being a grown-up, but it's still comforting to know that I'm not the only one who experiences the downs. As always, I'm glad I have my favorite comics to keep me laughing through all the trials and tribulations of life.
