6 Uncomfortable Truths Every Social Media User Knows In Their Heart
by GoComicsSocial media slid so quickly into our lives that we barely even noticed we were being invaded. Now it seems as though there's no part of everyday life that isn't touched in some way by social media. Even your best friend's dog has a dedicated Instagram account.
Today is #SocialMediaDay, a day dedicated to celebrating the many ways social media has revolutionized global communication, from Twitter's role in the Arab Spring to the latest Brexit memes on Tumblr. But how exactly should we celebrate something so ubiquitous?
It's no secret that social media has a dark side. So for this Social Media Day, we're highlighting six uncomfortable truths every social media user knows in their heart.
1. The number of people stuck in your Friend Limbo is almost irresponsible.
That person you met one time at a party who friended you on Facebook almost immediately? He's been in Friend Limbo for three years. You haven't seen him since.
2. Hate-stalking has become sort of a passion of yours.
There's nothing quite like the vindictive joy of realizing people you hate still deserve your scorn.
3. Nothing derails your plans quite like social media.
Expectation: A full, productive day. Reality: Nine hours later, you can say with certainty that your friend's sister's husband definitely got a nose job sometime around 2009.
4. No good deed goes unreported on Facebook.
Humblebrag? What humblebrag?
5. You care more than you should about how many Likes your posts get.
Anything under 15 Likes is an embarrassment to your ancestors.
6. #SocialMediaFatigue is a real problem.
Sometimes the constant comparison of your life to your friends' carefully curated social media presences gets to be a little overwhelming. There's nothing wrong with stepping back, unplugging, and remembering there's more to life than what shows up on your news feed.
This year for Social Media Day, why not step back and re-evaluate the role social media plays in your life? Don't forget to share your findings on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram! (Just kidding.)
Happy Social Media Day!
