Alley Oop's Creators Have Retired, But the Caveman May Return
by Stephen RothAlley Oop's husband-and-wife creative team, Jack and Carole Bender, signed off in their final strip on Saturday, thanking their readers for "a great ride:"
However, the iconic caveman, his chiseled abs and his uncommonly beautiful girlfriend, Ooola, may soon have more adventures in the Kingdom of Moo and beyond. In an interview with The New York Times, Andrews McMeel Universal Syndication President and all-around nice guy John Glynn hinted at a possible future for the 85-year-old comic strip that once inspired a #1 hit song by the Hollywood Argyles. Glynn noted that another strip now in its ninth decade - Nancy - has recently enjoyed a successful reboot with new creator Olivia Jaimes.
"It's exciting for me to think about these older features that have some brand equity that a lot of folks still enjoy," Glynn told The Times.
Stay tuned to learn about future plans for Alley Oop. In the meantime, reprints of earlier Alley Oop strips will appear in newspapers through the end of the year, and can also before found here on GoComics.com.
