'A Problem Like Jamal' Joins GoComics!
by Stephen RothWhether it's a white, middle-aged school principal trying to appear woke, or an imperious suburban mom demanding a business license for your lemonade stand, A Problem Like Jamal takes a no-holds-barred approach to some of the most hot-button social and cultural issues in America today.
Created by Tauhid Bondia, A Problem Like Jamal follows the adventures of a very aware young brother named Jamal Marcus, who single-handedly takes on racism, homophobia, sexism, and the injustice of too much damn middle school homework. Jamal is surrounded by equally strongminded characters like his mom Shay, his older brother Jermaine, best friend Leray Hokum, and Cody McKinley, Jamal's white friend who doesn't exactly know he's white. No topic is off limits for Jamal and his friends, as they address everything from family dynamics to casual racism, to the heartbreaking scenario that runs through Shay's mind as she weighs whether or not to buy Jamal a water gun.
A Problem Like Jamal officially joined GoComics on September 17, but you can click here to read strips dating back to early July.
