'Drabble' Turns the Big 4-0!
by Charlie UpchurchThere’s nothing quite like turning 40 to really bring things into focus. Kevin Fagan’s Drabble marks this milestone birthday today. Recently, we touched base with the cartoonist to see what's crossing his mind on this momentous occasion.
Fagan has been cartooning since childhood, and at one point wrote the great Charles Schulz for career advice. Schulz sent back a list of syndicates where Fagan should submit his work. Fagan ended up joining the same team as Peanuts by signing on, as a spry 21-year-old, to work with United.
Funnily enough, that relationship was on Fagan’s mind on his 40th anniversary.
“I don’t know if I have any wisdom,” he said. “But I remember talking to Charles Schulz around his 50th anniversary. He said, ‘Where do all these ideas come from?’ The greatest cartoonist was referring to all of the material he’d written over the years. And now I understand it — when you look back, it’s kind of amazing.”
Fagan has taken hardly a day off in his 40 years, providing us with the charming and relatable antics of the Drabble family.
"Looking back, none of the other anniversaries have really hit me, but the 40th does. I feel very fortunate."
We decided to have him pick a few of his favorite comics over the years below:
Congratulations to Fagan and Drabble for 40 years of the sweet and funny reality of the Drabbles. Here's to many more!
