It looks to me like “Ronald McDonald” wasn’t the original name in that panel; there have been times when a certain word or name was rewritten in reprints to avoid lawsuits (like when Binkley’s dad threatened to sell his kid to the Arabs, who were later replaced by Gypsies), and this appears to be one of them.
Anyone know who was originally singing about McPenguin burgers?
SherlockWatson: No- that’s definitely a spoof of a song that was used in the 80’s McDonald’s ads where they would basically sing the menu… http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=XvhDw5bQbd8
This sounds more like: “Hold the pickles, hold the lettuce, special orders don’t upset us…” a Burger King jingle. The original strip may have used the Burger King and had to remove it.
The point to the BK commercials was that McDonald’s had their burgers all made and the standard set of condiments put on, boxed up. So if you wanted a burger without pickles, for example, you had to wait until they made one and put on only the condiments you wanted. BK advertised “Have it your way.

Sorry, ana-demeter, but that was a McDonald’s promo on youtube; Binkley is singing a very old Burger King jingle. I did try to find it on youtube for you, but only found a clip with part of the jingle. The original goes:
Hold the pickles, hold the lettuce
Special orders don’t upset us
All we ask is that you let us
Serve it your way
Have it your way (have it your way)
at Burger King (have it your way)
That was from memory, btw – I’m one week from turning 50 :-)
Maybe it’s just me, but I always thought the McPenguin tasted just like they used some of their frozen fish cakes that the new hire had left out of the freezer too long.
Just for the record: yes the link I found on YouTube was a promo, but they did have a commercial with that song in. I could recite it as a kid but my now semi-adult brain could only dredge part of it up! :-)
HelmetHead, I’ll be 50 on the 24th! It’s nice to see some of us can still remember the important things in life! ;-)
I also remember when they gave out Big Macs to anyone who could say, “Bun seed sesame a on onions, pickles, cheese, lettuce, sauce special, patties beef all two!”

Well… sort of… does something involving fava beans count? Or does it have to involve fast food?

Ronald McDonald singing the Burger King jingle? That IS a nightmare.

I hope Opus is dreaming better dreams now.

I have that same dream–but I wouldn’t call it a nightmare. Then again, I LIKE lettuce on my McPenguin burger.

Adding poi wasn’t much of an improvement.

It's ‘Ronald McDonald’ in the book (which prints the originals) too.

Small world, stpatme! Hey, we miss Thanksgiving this year – no candle stuck in the pumpkin pie instead of a cake…
