Now that Dallas is buried deep in the ground, someone should put a lock on the lid. It could be the act that saves humanity from becoming a bunch of wild eyed mutants. On the other hand, we may be going down that road anyway.
The Regan era was WAY past Annette and company. Heck I remember watching jet contrails in 1980 and imagining they were ICBMs headed in or out. President Reagan’s policies brought down the Berlin Wall and ultimately toppled the oppressive Soviet regime. A Democrat Party program during those years would have put us all in chains.
Bomb shelters, dirty bombs and airline terrorists – same tune different lyrics.
And BTW. the Berlin Wall came down because the Soviet system imploded from its own weight. Reagan was LUCKY that happened because his policies would have been disastrous if they’d been done in the 1950s or 60s.
It MIGHT have worked in the 40s but then again, what sort of world do we want to live in? One where ‘might makes right’ or one where people get to choose their own path?
“Nuke them into the stone age” works if you don’t mind living in the stone age too. We need a better response to those who would do us harm than simply killing. There are always more who you don’t kill, and if you kill enough, you make EVERYONE an enemy (rightfully so!). We now have Islamic terrorists instead of Russian Cossacks … when the Islamic systems collapse from their own weight there will be another one waiting in the wings …. I’m not holding my breath for change though – we’ve been trying this system over and over for thousands of years, and still think the answer to prevent the situation is more of what we’ve been doing.
When individuals do that (continue the same action expecting different results) it is called ‘psychosis’; and there are medicines for that. When countries do it, it’s called ‘good thinking, practical conservatism’ and there apparently is not a cure for that. SIgh.
I don’t know the answer, but I know what it ISN’T. If YOU know the answer, please let us all in on the secret. There is a prize given out annually and I guarantee you’ll win it if you come up with the answer to world peace. It is named after the guy who invented TNT and there is even some money attached to it if you win …. Go for it smart people! :)
Did it ever occur to you that this is a COMIC STRIP? It’s intended to be FUNNY? Your self-righteous introspective on the state of humanity and politically skewed opinions of American history pretty much suck the life out of the strip and bore the bleeep out of the rest of us.
Reagan’s policies did have a hand in speeding up the inevitable demise of the USSR. He upped the ante, and they could not afford to stay in the game. They probably would have maintained the facade for another decade or two.
This WAS a political strip McDangerous. It was as backward and left leaning as it could be, as often as Breathed could make up some new backhanded, liberal fairytales, much like the network news does now, and Bloom County made no bones about being just to the side of Doonesbury with their wacko left nonsense.
