I once wore a choker with a peace sign on it to church. One of the old ladies berated me; “It’s a broken, upside down cross! It’s evil!” (Not an exact quote…I’m more going for emotion.) I turned to her and said that the sign only holds as much power as you let the devil give it. She had nothing to say to that.

It was originally a combination of the semaphore signs for N and D (nuclear disarmament). The peace movement took it over.
