Interesting choice. The better Godzilla movies have some clear subtext regarding industrialisation and the atomic age. They could well be included in a highbrow conversation about deeper allegories, if only Opus had the brains for it.

Of course, he’s most likely to have seen an American edit, with most of that cut out.

Opus’ film critic skills have improved since his first days on The Bloom Beacon: “Flop. A disaster.” “Terminally putrid”…

Speaking of incomprehensible reviews, I just read about a “visiting writer” describing a local dish as “indigestible but satisfying”. Whaa?

Godzilla vs. the Smog Monster (AKA Godzilla vs. Hedorah) is supposed to be an allegorical commentary on the negative affects of pollution, but the allegory is as subtle as a 500 foot tall lizard crushing a city.

The book’s origins were an environmental report on desert reclamation & throughout had a much stronger undertone of the vitality of water than so far portrayed on screen. Then there was the part about the danger of an entire imperial economy reliant on one resource ultimately in the hands of religious fanatics from that desert.

Dune is an incredibly difficult book to put into a film. Both previous attempts are lacking. With that said I give a big thumbs up to Sting for his performance in the 1st movie.

I AM going to the 3rd attempt once it hits theaters. I am willing to try again.

Oliver is smarmy and pedantic, but merely peddling populist bromides. He has no understanding of Dune (the novel) and not much of the flawed movie, either. Opus as usual speaks for Everyman. He should have remained silent and let Oliver sink under the weight of his own pomposity….
