When my son was with Public Works in his small AK town, a guy got hurt (fell off the truck), so the rest of the department had to take turns riding the back and grabbing the cans for a year or so while he healed.

His son (then 3-4 years old) thought it as the coolest thing in the world that Daddy got to work on the garbage truck!

There are some occupations that are very necessary.

Now its all done by trucks with big hydraulic arms that lift and empty the cans. Only the driver is needed.
