This is Bloom County’s response to editorial cartoonist Pat Oliphant’s criticism of Breathed winning the the Pulitzer. The little penguin is a satire of Oliphant’s “Punk”.

From Wikipedia: In 1987, Oliphant protested the selection of Berkeley Breathed for the Pulitzer Prize for Editorial Cartooning. Oliphant’s concern was that Breathed’s work “has, so far as I know, not appeared on one editorial page in the country.”45 Addressing the Association of American Editorial Cartoonists convention to hearty applause, Oliphant represented the views of many of his colleagues: that the seriousness of editorial cartooning as a journalistic pursuit was at risk, and that the Pulitzer was encouraging the valuing of humor over political statement.

The irony is that post 2015 Breathed was/is basically a modern version of Oliphant, with “Trump sucks” in lieu of Opus saying something wistful and poignant.

No doubt, the jealous girlfriend used a dull carrot peeler for lasting effect.

When I saw this strip in the newspaper, the editor changed the artwork to hide the “Reagan sucks” line.
