After spending years using the old Racal-Vadic modems, you know, the ones where you jammed the phone receiver into a couple of rubber grommets on top of a box about the size of a couple of loaves of bread, that would run 150-baud, when the Hayes Smartmoden 1200 came out I thought that the modem had been perfected. After all, it now transmitted text as fast as I could read it.

Only got rid of dial-up when they jacked up the price for the land line to where it was almost as much as the Wi-Fi…….plus the Windows XP was on it’s death bed.
