Without authorization, for instance, the feds spent $19.6 million annually on the International Fund for Ireland. Sounds like a noble cause, but the money went for projects like pony-trekking centers and golf videos.
Congressional budget-cutters spared the $440,000 spent annually to have attendants push buttons on the fully automated Capitol Hill elevators used by Representatives and Senators.
The Pentagon and Central Intelligence Agency channeled some $11 million to psychics who might provide special insights about various foreign threats. This was the disappointing “Stargate” program.
The federal government proposed spending $14 million for a new Army Museum, although there already were 47 Army Museums around the country.
Former Alaska Senator Ted Stevens is tied to, by far, the most famous earmark—the Gravina Island Bridge or, as it’s most commonly known, The Bridge to Nowhere.
There’s probably little chance that you’ve heard of or even been to Sparta, North Carolina, a town that had a population of about 18,000. That’s why so many people found it strange that Congress set aside $500,000 in federal funding for the construction of a very unique museum in Sparta: the Sparta Teapot Museum of Craft and Design.
Funding was secured by Rep. Virginia Foxx with help from Sen. Richard Burr, both Republicans from North Carolina. Foxx called the project a form of economic development that would benefit the state.
The museum closed its doors in January 2010.
The turtle-crossing project cost $3.4 million to construct a tunnel under Highway 27 north of Tallahassee, so wildlife can safely cross.
$518,000 in federal grants to study how cocaine affects the sexual behavior of Japanese quails.
SO let every business each pay for everything they use that the government created using tax money PLUSpay for their share of environmental damage they do water, air, the ground, etc. That would lower taxes!!
