My very first real job at an aircraft manufacturing company was in their plating shop. Two of us youngsters were hired the same day. We worked swing shift. There was a 90 day performance review. The other guy avoided work if at all possible. I tried to complete my tasks so I could learn other jobs in the shop. At the end of the 90 days we both got a raise of $0.05/hour, from $3.15/hour to $3.20/hour. I kept working hard reducing the my backlog of jobs until the old timer who had my job on dayshift told me to “leave me some work for me or I punch you out.” He was an old prize fighter and punchy. I’m sure he could harm me. After about a year I applied for a transfer and got a job testing Boeing 707 cabin compressors at that same company. Great fun.
