The closest I have been to a wild skunk is about two feet. It was just wandering past where I was sitting in the yard one evening.

We were camping once with a screen room on the trailer so the cats could go in and out. A skunk got in there somehow to eat the cat food. The cats hid from it. Luckily he left without incident.

Moral of the story? Don’t mess with anything if you don’t know what it is.

Uh, I’m not Fluffy. Fluffy paid me to substitute because Fluffy didn’t want to go to the vet.

I’ve had a couple of close calls with skunks over the years. The less interesting time was when I almost hit one whilst on my bike. The more interesting occasion was when camping as a kid – a couple of skunks came into our tent via a small gap in the front flaps. We woke to find two critters in our tent, and it took a while before we realized that they were skunks. We remained as still and quiet as possible, until it became clear that the skunks could not figure out how to get out and were starting to get panicky. We ever so slowly crept to the front of the tent to open the flaps fully, and by some miracle never did get sprayed.
