The minister was not offended by his golfing partner’s well-behaved vocabulary – but he might have been annoyed at the cartoonist’s spelling of ReverEnd.
Explicatives are involuntary. However, you can chose your colorful explicative vocabulary in advance to avoid disrespect to any Persons you deeply revere. “Brussels Sprouts!!” works just fine for that outburst. (Even though I like them now.) My mother used expressions like “fiddle sticks”.
The “golly” and “gosh” are thinly disguised corruptions of words he thinks might offend the Reverend – and not very colorful or creative.

Perhaps “reverand” is considered a more polite spelling of “reverend?”

So, who are Rever and Smith? Kind of blows the punchline if you can’t spell.
