The Woman appears to be an eternal plant optimist. But note Lupins’ “again.” He seems to know what’s coming. Gentle Puck is concerned about the Woman’s well-being in the face of past experiences. Elvis sounds slightly … cynical about the impending plant doom.
“I do not care for them.” It won’t be long now. Someone is going to try and eat those plants and then that someone is going to hork them back up – preferably on a carpet. So his paws are padded.
We had a blackout here for about five hours yesterday. Smokey and the boys were funny about it. First off, it’s the first real blackout we’ve had since we got DC and Bandit, so they had no idea what was going on. Had to break out a couple of camp fans which DC wasn’t sure about so he joined Smokey out on the porch. No, Smokey wasn’t running away from the fans, in the past she’s been known to lay in front of them or right behind them. But it was cooler out on the porch than inside so she was taking advantage of that. But the real fun part was water. No electricity, no fountain. I eventually had to take the dogs’ bowls and fill them with water so they could have some. Smokey had returned to the porch after getting discouraged at the fountain. Think that’s when DC joined her. But I decided to see if I couldn’t get Bandit to drink out of a dog bowl. Yeah, refill it and then play splash about and stir it so Bandit got the idea it was okay. He was funny because once he realized he could drink out of the dog’s bowl he started laying down to drink and purring like crazy. DC finally came in and I didn’t have to work as long with him before he was drinking. But Smokey was hilarious. I had to bring her in and show her the water. Man, she wasn’t even letting Bandit or DC return to that bowl, they’d try to stick their head in and she was acting like someone hugging whatever the object is so no one else can get it. Thankfully it wasn’t too hot at the time, 68 down to 67 outside, 76 inside (thankfully the thermometer by the door runs off AAs), but it was enough for the animals
I have a number of plants in the house and most are left alone by the boys but there are a few that are heavily munched on despite having cat grass available. I guess they taste better. Everything I have is safe for felines so it does no harm – at least to them – for nibbling to occur … don’t think the plants enjoy it much
Seriously- plants? 3 cats? Bwwaahahaha… We couldn’t even have an artificial tree last yuletime because the two of our “babies” kept nibbling the ends of the limbs off. I won’t even go into the horror of the ornaments…
Kip was standing like striped statue in the center of the room. Tre-C had moved back to the original distance she started from, her eyes glowing but her arms (and the serving tray) were slowly coming down. Megan had maneuvered herself between Kip and Tre-C… the most likely reason Tre-C was about to “dis-arm” Kip stammered; “B-but… you can’t be over two! I was in Los Angeles then!” Tre-C raised the tray; “Look at my FACE, not at my tail!” Kip was not used to that angle, but he tried it. And when he did,.. “Oh my Cat! Yenta? Didja’ have some work done? You look great!” Tre-C heaved a great sigh and let the tray slide out of her paws and onto the floor. Megan, slapped herself on the forehead and turned to Kip. “I thought you had this… OK, let me spell it out for you; DAW-TER. Tre-C is your daughter!” Kip slid limply into the nearest chair; “My daughter? Well I’ll be spayed…” Tre-C jumped in; “OK- can I do it?”
I like the accent of foliage in the house but all of mine are real ulooking fakes….cats are the number one reason, two I seem to have a ‘black thumb’, and three is deep porches so light but not enough sun. One disappointing nibble is enough for the cats to leave them all alone.
Good morning and happy Monday/Funday, orbsters and orbabies. Yum Yum graciously and kindly allowed me to sleep until 6:12 this morning. As for plants, I have two that are supposed to be kill-proof and they are doing quite well. One is a snake plant I picked up at the home show this past spring and the other has grown from some cuttings my sister-in-law gave me (philodendron? Rhododendron? Not quite sure). Outside I currently have a small planter of begonias I will attempt to bring in and overwinter.
We managed to keep a succulent pot going for three years. Mind you, we’re down to just two varieties as they’ve muscled out the other occupants of the pot.
We planted catnip and cat grass in the garden thinking this would stop the girls (we have 3) form digging up the rest. We learned that cats do not care for logic. The would eat the catnip and then proceed to go destroy everything else. Now I grow lemongrass and lavender and the cats stay out of the garden.
I just discovered BCN in the last 2-3 weeks and I love it very much. I’ve been binge-reading the old site in an effort to get caught up. My favorites so far are the Halloween and Christmas specials. I ordered the book from Amazon last week and it was delivered by the USPS at 8:30 SUNDAY NIGHT. Can you believe that??!?
Two things. First, Elvis better hope these are not the kind of plants that bite-back. Second, we have a little sign in our garden that says: “Grow Dammit!”
My father was super pleased to give me a potted plant as a thank-you gift a while back. It was a kalanchoe. I’ll save you the googling: it’s poisonous to cats. (Also it had been horribly over-watered by whatever store sold it to him. Kalanchoes are succulants and start to rot when they are over-watered.) I was able to find an out-of-reach spot for it to live, and made sure its leaves couldn’t fall off anywhere where the cat could get them, and have nursed it (dried it) back to health-ish, but it’s hard to scold my father for a gift like that.
Elvis says that he doesn’t care for them but I think he’s going to nip them down to the roots and find a good place to put them when he’s done with them.
My siblings used to send my mother flower arrangements frequently (which inspired my “Roses are red…” post above). Finding a place to put them where the cats couldn’t reach them and either eat them (and subsequently barf them right back up) or knock the vase over was… quite the challenge.
But one year, one of my sisters discovered “Edible Arrangements,” solving two issues (stuff the cats shouldn’t eat but would, and stuff Mom & I should eat but weren’t getting quite enough of).
My boys are not happy this afternoon. They’re doing road repairs in my complex this week and have put in new speed bumps right beside my house – Sammy especially is terrified of loud trucks so they’d have been stressed all day. And on top of that it’s really smokey out in the greater Vancouver area. It’s really irritating to the eyes and throat though it was a very impressive orange sunrise this morning. I hope it clears soon as it’s bad for my Dad too – he has breathing problems.

“…watered, placed in sunlight, and set up for failure.” ROFL- Pretty much says it all (and serves to remind me of my own “success” with plants…)

Are those succulents? Has the Woman checked to make sure the Boys won’t be poisoned by them when they eat them?

I think we’ve all seen that look that Elvis has in the last panel on feline faces before . . . and therefore we all know what happens next.

I am not familiar with cats and inside plants. I have never kept inside plants as they just die almost as soon as they have passed the threshold.
We live rurally and my little Tom does enjoy being a cow (he has seen these very large “cats” do so why can’t they do it).
