If your ceiling was popcorned before 1978, it likely contains asbestos. Even through the mid-eighties, manufacturers could sell asbestos bearing ceiling texture spray if it was made before 1978. Test it in situ, and call a professional for removal. It’ll be expensive, but less so than cancer.
Three doors down, in the master bedroom there was a partially dropped ceiling. Is was a 12 foot vaulted ceiling with three sections of suspended ceiling tiles that left two open sections. The suspended parts collected a large amount of dust. Neither I nor the current owners understand why that was done.

I hate popcorn ceilings, they’re hard to clean if there are dust and cobwebs on the ceiling.

Actually, most popcorn ceilings are relatively easy to remove. Just be sure to check for asbestos as John Wiley says above.
