There was a chance to shrink it about 12-13 years ago.
But then a Vegalien decided to shrink the A-tacks-S against the Det.
And then a bunch of others from Sen-8 and Kong-rs decided that increasing the A-tacks-S against the Det was worse than being eaten by the Det…
Get rid of Gnashinal Det? Cut defense 20%. Reduce waste/fraud/abuse in Medicare, along with ‘means testing’ and generic drugs. Let Bush tax cuts expire.
corzak, waste/fraud/abuse are a tiny tiny fraction of the spending problem. The overwhelming problem (>50%) are the unconstitutional (for the Federal Government) programs. The military is the largest constitutional program, and is probably too big due to playing world policeman, but it is dwarfed by the unconstitutional entitlement programs.
@Stuart, the Social Security trust fund is solvent with some tweaks (raise taxable level to above $90,000).
Medicare is a blown out mess, it is true, but NO ONE seems interested in giving up their Medicare, constitution or no. 60% or more of Medicare claims are made in the last year of life, so if you can talk everybody (and yourself) into ‘dying on the cheap’ that would fix the problem also.

I thought Washington’s solution to all problems was throw money at it.
Rakkav over 13 years ago
In my case, their solution is to ask me to throw more money at them. No joke, I got a letter today saying so.
In theory, this plot line could be as endless as the problem.

Gotta spend money to make money. Just be sure it’s always somebody else’s money you’re spending.

Clark and if the country is foolish enough to elect more Dumbocrats, the national debt will be twice that size.

Clark still believes that this is all Boooosh’s fault. Even after 2 and a half years of Hope and Change.

The democrats and the republicans are both to blame. Bush started it with tax cuts and more spending, Obama is just continuing it.

Just throw all the lobbyists into its mouth; no matter what happens, at least one problem will be solved.
