Bob Newhart had a skit years ago about a “griper” during the Revolutionary War:
“Oh, and the crowning touch, you know the trip across the Delaware? You know, ice on either side? Who do you think GETS UP and STANDS in the FRONT of the BOAT! You guessed it, Nutty George!
And how about the guy in the other boat painting him! How about HIM?"
That painting always amuses me, seeing as Washington and his men were rowing those boats in the dead of night in the middle of a storm. Everything would have been black.
The Battle of Trenton, a few hours later, only involved a few thousand men. But the victory brought the entire Revolution from brink of extinction. At the time of the ‘Crossing of the Delaware’ everyone believed the Revolution was actually already over.Except Washington. And apparently Brewster.
Brewster, cheering up the half frozen crew with his light hearted rounds singing. He could also entertain them with a chorus of ’You’re Rocking the Boat’ from ‘Porgy and Bess’.

When talking to Brewster, Washington found he COULD tell a lie. Like where he was going the next day… And how early they were going to break camp…
